Vehicle TrackingVehicle tracking has many different applications, and there are different types depending on what purpose the tracking is being used for. One of the most common uses for vehicle tracking is the monitoring of fleets of trucks distributing goods around a certain area. In this way vehicle tracking is very useful, because not only is the person in charge of the operation able to see if their trucks are delivering everything on time and in the right place, but they can also draw comparisons between how efficient their fleet is overall. There are generally two different types of vehicle tracking, active and passive tracking. Passive devices store GPS location, speed and heading, and have to be taken out of the vehicle in order to be analysed. Active devices meanwhile collect the same information in the same way, but often transmit the data while it is being collected, usually via a satellite or cellular network. Both of these can be useful in different ways: passive is better for an overview of the movements of the fleet, and active is better for tracking specific vehicles at a specific time, which can be useful if the truck is behind schedule or something similar. A lot of modern vehicle trackers incorporate both passive and active types, and they depend on whether the cellular network is available or not. This means that if the network is unavailable, data is not lost because of this, and is stored in the device instead.
